Peugeot 405 T16 (1994) – Into the Wild

Enough reason to keep

Peugeot 405 T16

After a few over-50s in ‘In het Wild’, today’s focus is on a much younger car. Despite its limited age, this Peugeot 405 T16 is just a bit more special.

Nice, classics like last week’s Citroën ID and Volvo Amazon, but the chance that you bump into a Peugeot 405 T16 is still a bit smaller. It happened to AutoWeek forum member HarmenA. He posted these photos of the special 405 in the spotterstopic on the AutoWeek forum. We wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of passers-by pass by this Peugeot, but in reality this is a rare and special 405.

This was the extremely limited crème de la crème among the Peugeots 405. As its name indicates, the 405 T16 has a turbo engine with sixteen valves in its nose. Nowadays nothing special anymore, but in the 80s and 90s you knew you had a sporty car. And sporty, he was. Thanks to its 200 hp 2.0 (220 hp in overboost), the permanently four-wheel drive Peugeot 405 T16 could spear from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 7 seconds and reached a top speed of 235 km/h. That was a bit different from the rest of the 405s. You can bet that even today you can still provide surprised faces if you gave him the tracks at the traffic light. After all, it is not really the performance you expect from a 405. Moreover, the rear spoiler is actually the only really striking thing that somewhat betrays the true nature of this 405. Of course there is also some thicker bumper work and in this case it is on alloy wheels that, as far as we know, do not belong to the 405 T16 but to the 205 GTI.

It still looks beautiful, and it is also a special color.

Although the Peugeot 405 T16 was not as extreme as its little brother with the same designation, the 205 T16, you were definitely the gentleman at the time with a 405 T16. Someone with a well-filled wallet, moreover. Only over 1,000 pieces were made and here in the Netherlands you had to pay over 80,000 guilders to receive one. The previous owner of this 405 did that, the current owner took it over in 2007. So it has been fun for almost 16 years now. Undoubtedly not every day, because it is now especially wise to give such a 405 T16 a quiet life. You can bet that here is a (especially for a 405) quite expensive car. You probably just lost the same thing as when it was new and it will only increase in value.

Almost two years ago, AutoWeek was able to experience how the Peugeot 405 T16 compares to its modern descendant, the 508 PSE. Are you more curious about our first impression at the end of 1992? You can read it here.
