Music gets people moving, even in the car. Depending on the song that is playing, drivers (especially young drivers) often unconsciously drive faster or slower. In Europe, the number of road accidents is increasing* and statistically, young drivers are at the highest risk of being involved. Peugeot is responding to this with the new, innovative Road Sessions app. The application mixes real-time music and thus encourages responsible driving behavior. According to a report by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), it appears that the number of road casualties would be significantly reduced if drivers drove just 1 km/h slower.
Road Sessions app
Peugeot is convinced that music can play a positive role in promoting road safety. That is why the brand is launching the Road Sessions app in the Netherlands. The application mixes real-time music to encourage (young) drivers to drive responsibly. The app is based, among other things, on listening behavior in the car and adjusts the music to encourage the driver to improve his or her driving behavior and reduce speed when necessary. Peugeot hopes to contribute to road safety and reduce the number of victims.
Use of data
Road Sessions also uses data about the driver’s driving behavior, geolocation, navigation data and the applicable speed limit. Based on this, the app mixes the music in real time. The app recognizes variables in the music that cause many drivers to unconsciously drive faster, such as the tempo, the danceability, the volume and the energy it provides. The app then adjusts the music tracks, for example in accordance with the speed limit. This means the driver hears music that suits the road and traffic situation. The app responds if the speed is too high and adjusts the music to encourage the driver to drive more slowly. The Road Sessions app mixes music from stations selected by Peugeot’s development team.
Music platform
The app also contains a curated session from renowned DJ and producer Tom Trago. Users can choose to listen exclusively to his music selection during their ride. Peugeot is also inviting other European DJs to come with sessions to promote both their music and safer driving. The brand wants to develop the Road Sessions app into a platform where music lovers can share their favorite songs and discover new tracks.
With the Road Sessions app, which was developed by 180 Amsterdam in collaboration with technology partner Robot Kittens from Hilversum, Peugeot contributes to more intuitive and effective communication about road safety. The Road Sessions app can be downloaded for free from Google Play and the Apple App Store. Experience how music can contribute to a safer traffic environment.
