The Piaggio Group is developing an airbag for motorized two- and three-wheelers, Piaggio Group, for greater driver safety. The Italian giant is collaborating with Autoliv, Inc. for this. world leader in safety systems for the automotive industry.
The two parties signed a cooperation agreement with a view to developing airbags to provide motorcyclists with more protection and increase driving pleasure. The airbags are mounted on the chassis of the vehicle and are deployed in a few milliseconds.
The popularity of powered two-wheelers continues to increase due to global urbanization and urban densification, as well as the practicality and ease of use of powered two- and three-wheelers. Today, scooters and motorcycles are equipped with advanced safety systems, such as ABS (Antilock Braking System) and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), and the addition of airbags is a further step in this direction.
“Autoliv’s mission is to save more lives and provide world-class life-saving solutions for mobility and society. That is why we develop products that offer specific protection to vulnerable road users. The development of these products is an integral part of our sustainability agenda and an important step towards our goal of saving 100,000 lives per year by 2030.”
Autoliv has already developed the first concepts using advanced simulation tools and crash tests. Autoliv will now work with Piaggio Group to further develop the product and eventually commercialize the concept.
