2023 should have been the year of the introduction of CarPlay 2.0, but Apple failed to do so. Now Porsche and Aston Martin are giving a preview of what their new CarPlay will look like.
CarPlay 2.0 in 2024
With CarPlay you transform the screen in your car into a display for your iPhone. All functions of your iPhone that are useful while driving are immediately accessible, with the same interface that you know from your phone. But CarPlay as you know it now is already a few years old. That is why Apple presented CarPlay 2.0 in the summer of 2022. The new version no longer just takes over one screen in your car, but the entire dashboard, including the speedometer.
Apple had originally promised that the first cars with CarPlay 2.0 would become available in 2023. But the year passed without a glimpse of the new CarPlay. However, in the first week of 2024, two major car brands are now giving a preview. You have to see this.
CarPlay in Porsche and Aston Martin
Apple is working closely with car companies for CarPlay 2.0. Because if so much of a car is taken over by your iPhone, you want the cars themselves to still have something like a brand identity. The two luxury brands Porsche and Aston Martin are now showing how this will work.
For example, the preview of Porsche’s CarPlay interface shows a trio of circular gauges behind the steering wheel, as well as a background image with the brand’s signature “Pepita” pattern.
Aston Martin, on the other hand, is taking a slightly different path. The screen behind the steering wheel consists of a ‘Now Playing’ album cover with a round speedometer and tachometer next to it. The latter bears the traditional text ‘Handbuilt in Great Britain’.
Apple’s next generation of CarPlay still requires an iPhone to share app-related information, but it’s not a one-way street now. The car itself can now also share its own, driving-specific information on the CarPlay interface. This connection to the car also means that CarPlay 2.0 can display information from the car’s infotainment system (such as information about tire pressure and the like).
When will CarPlay 2.0 arrive?
While Porsche did not provide details on the timing of the launch of this latest CarPlay in its models, Aston Martin shared that version 2.0 is compatible with its latest infotainment system launching in 2024. This is in cars such as the DB12 coupe and DB12 Volante.
Given Porsche’s relationship with Volkswagen and Aston’s with Lucid and Mercedes, we think so iPhoned that it is only a matter of time before these companies integrate this technology into other cars within their portfolios. In short: 2024 will be the year of CarPlay 2.0. Do you want to stay informed? Then sign up for our daily or weekly newsletter.
