In our previous review you can read how good and cheap the Land Rover Defender 110 P400e is. But did you know that for 85,767 euros you can also plug the charging cord into other plug-in SUVs? A price comparison with the Ford Explorer, Audi Q7 and Jeep Wrangler
Land Rover Defender 110 P400e
As colleague Jaap clearly explains in his driving impression of the Land Rover Defender P400e, a plug does wonders for the sales price of large SUVs in the Netherlands. And Ford, Audi and Jeep are doing just as hard. Since we often shop in lower price ranges in this section, we hadn’t noticed before that all four brands offer their large plug-in SUVs for about the same amount: 80 to 90 grand. But what happens to the price if you ask for cool 20-inch wheels, cool leather upholstery and a cool towbar? And don’t forget adaptive cruise control, so that the car brakes itself for the lingering Suzuki Celerio in the left lane. Otherwise we would drive right over it…
Defender 110 P400e – four-cylinder, 404 hp, 640 Nm
- Defender – 85,767 euros
- Leather upholstery – 7713 euros
- Adaptive cruise control – 2030 euros
- 20″ Alloy – Standard
- Towbar (3000 kilos) – 810 euros
Total: 96,320 euros
Cheaper – Ford Explorer PHEV
The Ford Explorer PHEV order form fits on the back of a beer mat, as there are one trim and two factory options to choose from: the color and the tow bar. If the ST-Line version doesn’t have a system or function, you’re out of luck. Although that chance is small, because Ford supplies a very complete car.
Explorer PHEV – V6, 457 hp, 825 Nm
- ST-Line – 80,300 euros
- Leather upholstery – standard
- Adaptive cruise control – standard
- 20″ Alloy – Standard
- Trailer hitch (2500 kilos) – 1200 euros
Total: 81,500 euros
Cheaper – Audi Q7 55 TFSI e
Unlike Ford, Audi has a lot to choose from. The Q7 PHEV is available as a 55 TFSI (381 hp) and as a 20 mille more expensive 60 TFSI with 462 hp. We need the extensive options list to fulfill all our wishes. One of the options is the world’s most expensive towbar (3139 euros), with which you can move no less than 3.5 tons.

Cheaper – Jeep Wrangler 4xe
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is an odd one out. It doesn’t compete with the Q7 and Explorer, but it competes with the Defender – if you know what we mean. They both like to play in the mud. The option list is therefore devoted to robust floor mats and roof racks for mountain bikes, the largest wheels are 18 inches.
