Radar cars against speeders

The police will use radar cars throughout the Netherlands to tackle speeding drivers. That says project manager Infrastructure Egbert-Jan van Hasselt of the National Police in an interview in De Telegraaf on Friday. Fifty to one hundred radar cars must be deployable by 2022.

The inconspicuous police cars will measure the speed of motorists while driving. A trial with the use of radar cars had already been successful, according to Van Hasselt.

By 2022, up to a hundred radar cars must be deployable on Dutch roads. They must be able to carry out speed checks on a dangerous route while driving. Motorists will receive the fine at home, just like with speed cameras and route control. A motorist therefore does not have to be stopped.

According to the project leader, the offensive is necessary because there are still too many deaths in traffic by speeders and motorists who behave antisocial in traffic in a different way. Last year there were 661 road deaths in the Netherlands.

“The behavior of people in traffic is actually a reflection of the behavior in society. And if you do not take corrective action against it, things will go wrong. I also see the tolerance decreasing, because the ‘lord in traffic’ is almost there. no longer against it. It’s just me, me, me, “says Van Hasselt.

“It seems as if some drivers feel untouchable and do not want to give space to other road users. Motorists who quickly close the hole when someone wants to insert, so that it does not work. They are the same people who do not wait when they enter a store when someone goes to come walk outside. “
