Nouvelle vague with electric and hydrogen models

New Renault 5 prototype
Renault modernizes. The French brand shows this with an electric prototype, a metamorphosis of the iconic Renault 5.
Today is an important day for Renault. The brand presents the new strategy for the next 5 years. It wants to modernize in these times of disruption, with a strong focus on technology, service and clean energy. In concrete terms, it will release fourteen new models by 2025, seven of which are fully electric. The brand is introducing hydrogen powertrains for commercial vehicles. In addition, more passenger cars are entering the middle class segment, especially compact middle class vehicles (the so-called ‘C-class’).
A vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive
The French brand immediately puts its words into action, illustrating its announced direction with a prototype of the new Renault 5. The design team was inspired by the R5 from the 1970s to the 1990s and French charm. For example, it follows the basic shape of the original model, adds a canvas roof and prints the French flag on the rear view mirrors.
But the new Renault 5 is anything but a retro model. Design director Gilles Vidal says: “This prototype simply embodies modernity, a vehicle relevant to its time: urban, electric, attractive.” The lines and surfaces are cleanly drawn and the style elements hide modern functions. The rear lights are fitted with aero flaps, the fog lights in the bumper turn out to be daytime running lights. For example, Renault illustrates with the prototype that it is ready for a ‘Nouvelle Vague’, a new batch of mobility solutions.
