It remains a point of discussion, does the blue light from a smartphone, computer or tablet cause you to sleep less well? From one recent research – published in Sleep Health – shows that Night Shift has no influence on sleep.
Other to research say it does make a difference. One thing is certain, by reducing the blue light from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, your eyes will relax and they will not be extra stimulated by the bright light. That is why it is smart to use Night Shift for iPhone, iPad and Mac, but do you really want to relax? Then not using a smartphone or computer before going to bed is best.
Reduce blue light from iPhone or iPad
The iPhone, iPad and Mac are equipped with a filter that reduces blue light and casts a yellow glow on the screen. This option is called ‘Night Shift’ and it is recommended to use this function.
You can decide for yourself how bright the blue light should be replaced by a yellow glow. If you find the screen too yellow, you can adjust this via the steps below.
- Open the Settings app
- Navigate to ‘Screen & Brightness’
- Tap ‘Night Shift’
- Adjust the intensity with the slider at ‘Color temperature’

The intensity of the blue light on your screen is immediately adjusted based on an example. The closer the slide switch is to ‘Warmer’, the better.
Via the ‘Scheduled’ option you can choose to switch Night Shift on and off automatically. This can be done using a start and end time, but also automatically from sunset to sunrise.
Adjust Night Shift color temperature Mac
On a Mac you can also use Night Shift and adjust the intensity of the blue light.
- Open ▸ System Settings (System Preferences)
- Click on ‘Displays’ in the sidebar
- Go to ‘Night Shift’

Just like with an iPhone or iPad, you can adjust the color temperature with a slide switch and enable the option automatically via a schedule.
Switch on via Control Panel
You can also quickly enable Night Shift from the Control Center for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. To do this, open the iOS or iPadOS control panel, place your finger on the brightness switch, wait a few moments and tap ‘Night Shift’. On a Mac, you can enable this from macOS Big Sur by opening the panel ▸ display ▸ Night shift.
Getting used to it is the message
When you use Night Shift you will notice that the yellow glow is quite intense, but you get used to it. It is also important that you take the time to get used to this function. Good to know, during the day the yellow glow seems more intense than in the evening. When the ambient light is less, the yellow glow is also less noticeable.
