Remove old Apple Watch backup

The Apple Watch also has a backup system just like the iPhone. When you connect a Watch to an iPhone, backup copies are made. These are stored hidden in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. When you make a backup of your iPhone in iCloud, the Apple Watch Backups are also stored online.

Every time you fully disconnect a Watch from your iPhone, a full backup is made. This way you always have a complete backup of your Apple Watch so that you can put it back on a new one. You can manage and remove all these backup copies for extra storage space.

Manage Apple Watch backup

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Navigate to ‘General’
  • Tap ‘iPhone storage’

Search now in the list for the Watch application. Because the copies do not claim much storage space, you will find the application in most cases at the bottom of the list. An overview with all backups for the Watch is then opened.

Swipe from right to left to activate the removal option. Of course you can also use the Change button to erase one or more copies. Tap ‘Remove all backup copies’ to erase everything in one go. If you now completely disconnect and restore the Apple Watch, it will make a new backup.
