The Renault 4 was a nice simple and affordable car for a wide audience. However, Renault is now giving its icon a completely different look by turning it into a kind of drone. The creation is called AIR4.
The Renault 4 exists 60 years and that is celebrated in a special way. Renault is joining forces with the creative minds of TheArsenale (a design agency with a focus on mobility) to give the Renault 4 wings. Literal. It presents the AIR4, where the name of course refers to the airworthiness of the ‘car’ and the ‘R’ in R4. In short, the AIR4 is a huge drone with the coach of a Renault 4 in the center.
The Renault 4 is immediately recognizable, although some modern elements have been added to the classic Frenchman. For example, in the grille there are round LED headlights and the illuminated modern logo of Renault. At the corners of the nose are large LED units for more lighting, which in shape are reminiscent of the ‘hooks’ on the bumper of some versions of the R4. The rear lights have also been replaced by modern-looking LED models and finally, the body, which is now completely made of carbon fiber, has been given a nice modern print. A full interior is not in it: two folding seats, which are most reminiscent of copies that you can find on a balcony in Paris, offer space for the occupants.
Nice and nice, but can the thing fly? Of course. However, it is still somewhat unclear how the AIR4 should be operated. But those who do understand it should be able to move the fully electric AIR4 horizontally through the air at about 94 km/h. The colossus can fly at an angle of up to 70 degrees and up to a maximum height of 700 m. The propellers generate a total of 380 kilograms of vertical thrust.
What’s in it for us? Not much for the time being if you ask us, it is mainly a special design study in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Renault 4. However, this is not the only news about the R4 in the anniversary year. The special Renault Suite N°4 was recently also presented in honor of the milestone and there may be even more after the AIR4. The biggest news, however, is the arrival of a new Renault 4. Probably a crossover, fully electric anyway. We expect to see more of this in 2022.
