Not the Volvo you know
As announced, Renault and Volvo are setting up a joint venture. Under the banner of Flexis SAS, the two companies will collaborate on electric commercial vehicles.
Commercial vehicles, yes. The ‘Volvo’ in this story is therefore not the Volvo Car Corporation that falls under Geely, but the Volvo Group that is responsible for, among other things, the brand’s trucks. Apart from the name, history and some landing pages, the two have little in common. It is interesting in this context that Renault Trucks, the manufacturer of Renault trucks, is also part of the Volvo Group. So why a collaboration? Well, because Flexis SAS is a joint operation of Volvo Group and the Renault Group that we know from passenger cars. Renault Trucks is therefore not directly involved.
The newly established company Flexis SAS is located in France and will be specifically involved in the development of electric, ‘software defined’ vans. In a broader perspective, the company wants to ‘address the growing need for clean and efficient logistics’. Volvo and Renault will each invest 300 million euros in the joint venture over the next three years. Another 120 million comes from the French transport group CMA CGM, as part of that company’s efforts to make its logistics branch cleaner.
