For the latest generation of iPhone and iPad, equipped with Apple’s own network modem, iOS and iPadOS provide a special privacy feature. This feature allows users to prevent mobile networks from using their exact location. Instead, only a less precise location is shared, which is especially useful for those who want to maximize their privacy.
The function, called Limit exact locationis available on compatible iPhone and iPad models with supported mobile carriers. Currently, this feature is available across the EU and the UK, and you must enable it manually. Below we explain how you can activate and use this privacy option.
Restrict exact location for providers
Of Limit exact location limit what location data mobile networks can use to determine your position. This doesn’t mean your location will disappear completely, but providers will be less able to accurately determine where you are. This option is only available for iPhone and iPad models equipped with Apple’s own network modem: C1 or newer. This can be found in the iPhone 16, among others, while the iPhone 17 and iPad Air have the C1X network chip.

Since Apple developed this modem itself, it can add additional capabilities, such as limiting your location to providers. Providers use this information, among other things, to map crowds. The accuracy is so high that the location can be determined at street level; By hiding your exact location, providers see a less accurate position.

- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Mobile network.
- Go to Mobile data optionsif you use multiple SIM cards, first tap the desired telephone number under SIM cards
