Review PenMat 2: nanotexture for (almost) every iPad

Do you have an iPad, but would you like to have an iPad with nano-texture? Then you better start saving, because those iPads cost a small fortune. This is because the option with nano-texture is only available on the most expensive iPad Pros. The ‘cheapest’ iPad Pro with nano-texture costs a whopping 2079 euros. But don’t worry, PenTips has the perfect solution for you.

The PenMat 2 is a special screen protector and gives your iPad the feel and look of an iPad with nano-texture (and that for a fraction of the price). That means that the screen of your tablet has a matte look.

Of course, there are advantages to this. If you like to draw (or write) on the iPad, the PenMat 2 gives you the feeling of working on real paper. Especially drawing feels a lot more natural than on a ‘bare’ iPad screen.

In addition, the matte texture also ensures that glare is less visible. You can still see it, but it is at least a lot less annoying. Do you still want to view the screen in the highest quality? Then you can easily remove the screen protector and add it again later.

Before we started the PenMat 2 review we were afraid that the Apple Pencil would be less responsive, but nothing could be further from the truth. The pen had no problems and worked just as well and precisely as without the screen protector.

With a few minor drawbacks

During the review we also discovered a few small disadvantages of the PenMat 2. Due to the matte layer you do lose some brightness of the screen. Also you can see fingerprints (and pen marks) quite well on the coating, so you still have to use a cleaning cloth every now and then.

We do have one small side note: keep in mind that swiping your finger across the screen and drawing with the Apple Pencil on the PenMate 2 does make a bit more noise. It’s not annoying, but in quiet rooms you can hear it.

Buy PenMat 2

The PenMat 2 has a suggested retail price of 59.99 euros and is available for sale at Bol and the website of PenTips. At the moment there is a special promotion on the PenTips website where you can get the PenMat 2 for 47.99 euros.

Conclusion: PenMat 2 review

We are very pleased with the PenMat 2. The matte screen protector is easy to apply without annoying air bubbles due to underlying dust.

It’s a shame that Apple’s nano-texture iPad is only available on the most expensive models, but thanks to the PenMat 2 you still get a similar experience (for a fraction of the price).

In addition, you can use this screen protector not only on the iPad Pro, but also on the iPad Air. And the great thing is that you can easily remove the PenMat 2 and reuse it.

You do lose some of the screen brightness and smudges can still be annoying with this screen protector. But these are only minor drawbacks that do not detract from the advantages of the PenMat 2.
