Ring has announced new features for its devices. For example, certain Ring Video Doorbell models will have the ability to recognize packages and send you a special package notification. And the Spotlight Cam Battery gains the ability to set up more specific notifications, so you only receive targeted, personalized messages.

Ring offers various smart solutions, such as the Ring Alarm we tested. Over the past year, Ring introduced “geofence” to make your Ring devices and notifications even more responsive to how you use them. Now, two new intelligent notifications are added: Package Notifications and Custom Events.

Package notifications: know when your package will be delivered or picked up
With the new ‘Package notification’ function, you will receive a message when the camera detects a package in a zone designated by you, for example in your driveway or at the front door. You will see ‘Package notification’ on the screen, so if you expect a package, you no longer have to check the motion notification to see if it is already there. From now on, the delivery person can always leave your package at that place, even when you are not there – and you can keep an eye on your order via the Ring app.
The package notification is available to Ring Protect users with a Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 or a Ring Video Doorbell (2nd generation).

Custom Events: More Custom Notifications
Every home is different and you should only get the notifications that matter to you. Custom events allow you to set up your Ring Spotlight Cam Battery to get motion alerts relevant to you only. Thanks to the artificial intelligence of Ring cameras, an open door or gate can be detected. To do this, the camera looks at the difference between an image in which something is closed and the ‘open’ image. With this metric, you can set up custom notifications that alert you only when you specifically need it in your home.
Suppose you find the option to detect an open door or gate useful. While setting up your Ring Spotlight Cam Battery in the Ring app, take two photos: one of the closed door or gate and one of the open door or gate. This teaches the camera the difference between the two – and you can set when you get a notification for this. From now on, you no longer have to wonder whether you closed the door behind you when you left.
The custom events feature will be available to Ring Protect users with a Spotlight Cam Battery in the coming months.
