Rotate photos and videos on your phone, that’s how it works

Rotate photos and videos on your phone, that’s how it works

You probably know that feeling. You take a nice photo or video, but it was recorded incorrectly. For example, if you scroll through your gallery you will see a nice video that you accidentally filmed in portrait mode. We explain how to solve that.

Rotate photo or video

Anyone who regularly films or takes pictures with his phone will often have had to deal with images that are incorrectly oriented. Especially with videos, that mistake is easily made when, for example, you start filming standing up and immediately tilt your phone afterwards.

In the past, in the case of photos, you also had to install an editing app like Snapseed to rotate images, but it also works from the Google Photos editor. Google Photos got a new photo editor that contains a lot more functions.

In the steps below, we’ll show you how to rotate photos and videos from Google’s gallery app, which comes pre-installed on Android phones. Regardless of whether the manufacturer of your smartphone provides its own gallery app on the devices.

Roadmap

Rotate a photo
  1. Open Google Photos and tap on the photo in question
  2. Tap the edit icon at the bottom, either the second from the left to start
  3. Tap “Crop” at the bottom
  4. Then tap the icon with the rotating arrow at the bottom, the middle
  5. Keep tapping until the orientation is correct
  6. Tap ‘Save’ at the bottom right
  7. Choose ‘Save’ again
  8. Press ‘Allow’ if necessary

Rotate a video
  1. Open Google Photos and press the video in question
  2. Tap the edit icon at the bottom, either the middle
  3. Then tap the icon with the rotating arrow at the bottom right
  4. Keep tapping until the orientation is correct
  5. Tap “Save Copy” in the top right.

You have now made a copy, that is, the original video with the wrong orientation is still on your phone. You can delete that video afterwards in Google Photos.
