Samsung bets on new foldable smartphones

Samsung bets on new foldable smartphones

Samsung has presented a variety of new mobile products. The new foldable smartphones stood out the most: the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3. In addition, the Galaxy Buds2 earphones and the Galaxy Watch4 smartwatch were also announced.

Samsung is one of the pioneers when it comes to foldable smartphones, which can be opened and closed thanks to a flexible screen panel. Samsung presented two series of smartphones with a flexible screen: the Fold, which you open like a book to turn it into a tablet-like smartphone, and the Flip, which can be opened the other way around like an old-fashioned clamshell phone.

However, the foldable smartphone has not caught on so far. This could possibly be due to the extremely high prices and the fragility of the foldable screens. The screens have a plastic top layer and of course a hinge. However, Samsung is eager to mass-produce foldable smartphones (despite the false start) with the new Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. Samsung is so keen that it sacrifices its successful Galaxy Note series to focus on the new foldable smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 should take over from the Galaxy Note. The smartphone is large and powerful, and also supports the S Pen stylus. The difference with the Galaxy Note is that this stylus cannot be hidden in the smartphone.

Like the other Fold smartphones, the device has two screens. One on the front and one on the folding inside. The screen on the front is a 6.2-inch Full-HD screen with a refresh rate of 120 hertz. The foldable screen has a 7.6 inch screen diameter, a higher resolution and the same refresh rate.

The housing of the Fold3 is 6.8 x 15.8 x 1.6 centimeters when folded. When you unfold it, the size is 12.8 x 15.8 x 0.6 centimeters. It is also striking that the housing is water resistant, just like the Galaxy Z Flip3 by the way.

Finally, the Fold3 has three cameras on the back, the batteries have a combined capacity of 4,400 mAh and the device runs on Android 11 with Samsung’s own skin.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3

The Galaxy Z Flip3 looks like a clamshell phone, as we know it from about twenty years ago. When the device is closed, you notice a small screen next to the dualcam. Here you can see notifications, the time, weather forecast, and so on.

When you open the Galaxy Z Flip3, you have an elongated 22 by 9 screen with a diameter of 6.7 inches. The screen has a Full HD resolution and a 120 hertz refresh rate.

The housing is made of glass on both sides and the frame is made of aluminum. When folded, the Galaxy Z Flip3 measures 7.2 x 8.6 x 1.7 centimeters. When unfolded, this size is 7.2 x 16.6 x 0.7 centimeters. This smartphone also runs on Android 11 with Samsung’s OneUI skin. The battery capacity is relatively low: 3,300 mAh.

Unfortunately, both foldable smartphones are not yet very accessible priced. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is available from 1049 euros. The Galaxy Z Fold3 costs 1799 euros. Both smartphones will be available from August 27.

Galaxy Watch 4

This launch is also important for Samsung in the field of smartwatches. The company is abandoning its own Tizen platform and switching to Google’s WearOS. Not surprising, because both Tizen and WearOS lost the competition with the Apple Watch. By joining forces, Samsung and Google can hopefully catch up. The first smartwatches to follow this new course are the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Still, the smartwatches have an unmistakably Samsung look and interface.

Samsung’s smartwatches are also available from August 27, with the Galaxy Watch 4 starting at 269 euros. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic costs a hundred euros more: 369 euros.

Galaxy Buds 2

Finally, Samsung also presented the Galaxy Buds 2, the wireless earphones look just like the first generation as earplugs that you place in your ear. Samsung has mainly tried to improve wearing comfort by keeping the weight as low as possible. These earphones are released simultaneously and cost 149 euros.
