Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus
Samsung has announced the Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22 Plus and the Galaxy S22 Ultra. They were announced along with the Galaxy Tab S8 range at the Galaxy Unpacked event.
Remarkably, the South Korean manufacturer has split the launch in two, one for the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus and one for the S22 Ultra. That is not without reason, because Samsung focuses on different target groups with these two. According to the manufacturer, the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are intended for social junkies who are creative and want to show who they are with self-expression.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
The S22 Ultra is for those who want the best performance and cameras in a phone and are fans of the Galaxy Note series. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has been given the appearance of the Note and also an S Pen that can be stored in the housing, just like with the Note.
According to Samsung, the S Pen is the fastest and most responsive ever. With a 70% lower input delay, according to Samsung, this ensures a real pen-on-paper experience† So you write and draw on the screen of the S22 Ultra as if you were sliding a pen over paper.
Small or large, and sustainable
The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are equipped with an AMOLED display with a variable refresh rate of 120 Hz. The S22 has a 6.1-inch screen and the Galaxy S22 a 6.6-inch screen. The S22 has a peak brightness of 1300 nits and that of the S22 Plus has 1750 nits, making the screens easy to read in all lighting conditions. The Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 6.8-inch screen, as well as a 120 Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 1750 nits.
The Galaxy S22 series is made of Armor Aluminum. That is Samsung’s strongest aluminum housing to date. In addition, the smartphones are equipped with Gorilla Glass Victus + for both the front and back. Thanks to this sturdy glass, you don’t have to worry if you accidentally drop your device.
The packaging of the Galaxy S22 consists of 100% recycled paper and the phones even consist of 20% recycled plastic from the ocean. For other parts, such as the speaker module and the power and volume keys, PCR materials have been used.
Night Photos, Portrait Mode and Golden Retrievers
All phones have some improvements for the camera. For example, there is the 23% larger sensor compared to the S21 and S21 Plus. Together with the so-called Adaptive Pixel technology, this sensor can collect more light. This allows more details and colors to be captured, even in the dark. This also applies to selfies and photos taken with portrait mode.
This portrait mode should also take a lot better pictures thanks to new artificial intelligence. Thus, the object in the foreground appears sharper in a blurred background. That applies not only to photos of your friends, but also photos of your Golden Retriever. The Galaxy S22’s new portrait mode helps you prevent your pet’s fur from disappearing into the background.
The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus exchange the 64 MP telephoto camera of the predecessors for a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The S22 Ultra retains the 108MP telephoto camera and the two 10MP telephoto cameras from its predecessor, as does the 2.4 um pixel sensor. New is the Super Clear Glass lens for video recordings, where you don’t have to worry about your night shots being ruined by the light of a flash. Furthermore, with Auto Framing you can easily capture what you want to see in your photo, whether that is one person or ten. This feature works with Samsung Camera, Google Duo, Facebook Messenger, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex Meet, and Zoom, among others.
All S22 phones can access the app Expert RAW which allows you to save photos in RAW format up to 16-bit and have more control over your edits with more data from your images.
Powerful performance and battery
The Exynos 2200 in the phones, combined with machine learning and artificial intelligence, should ensure smooth performance whether streaming, browsing, or navigating. The battery of the S22 lasts a whole day on a charge and is charged via a 25W fast charger. The Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra last more than a day on a single charge and have a 45W fast charger. These chargers are not included in the box and can be purchased separately. In terms of capacity of the fast chargers, the competition is miles ahead. We would have liked to see a more powerful fast charger this year.

Software and an additional year of updates
Samsung today not only announced its new Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Tab S8 series, but also an extension for the current update policy. The S22 phones and the Tab S8 series will get updates for a year longer. So that’s four new Android versions instead of four and at least five years of security updates instead of four. Samsung’s One UI 4.0 software shell is based on Android 12 and the S22 series runs on its latest variant, One UI 4.1. A new feature is Google Duo live sharing. This feature allows you to share Google Arts & Culture, Google Maps, JamBoard, Samsung Notes, Samsung Gallery and YouTube during a video call in Google Duo. So you can view photos in the Gallery with friends, or make notes of meetings with colleagues in Samsung Notes. The security platform Samsung Knox Vault can also be found on the S22 series.
