Samsung presents a new foldable folding phone with the Galaxy Z Flip6. This Flip6 folding phone has been adapted to recent and better technology and now also includes AI functions. Read the review here to see whether it really packs a punch and how it differs from the Flip5.
A new model of the Samsung Galaxy Flip foldable phone has been released called Flip6. This is primarily distinguished from the Flip5 by improved durability, higher performance, longer battery life, better camera and not to mention the AI functions that we got to know with the S24. We received the blue model SM-F741B for review with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. There is also a model with 256GB storage and there are 7 color variants.
Design
Folded, the device looks compact (85 x 72 x 15 mm), fits perfectly in your pocket and offers a small Amoled screen on the front (720 x 748 pixels / 60Hz). This screen, which also includes the camera lenses, displays the time and provides access to a limited number of applications. The back has a matte finish that does not leave fingerprints. The sides are slightly more angular, making the appearance a bit more businesslike.
Unfolded, it is an elongated device (165 x 72 x 7mm), with a barely visible seam and 120Hz/2600nits AMOLED screen with 2640 x 1080 (FHD+/22:9) pixels. That gives a nice clear image, even in the sun. Long and slim has the advantage that you can operate it with one hand. The whole thing looks sturdy with improved hinge durability through a reinforced construction edge and stronger aluminum. However, this type of folding device always remains slightly more vulnerable than a standard telephone. With an IP48 certification, the device is resistant to water, but hates small dust particles. The fingerprint scanner is in the button on the right and is somewhat less effective than a screen variant.
Technology
The new fast Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chip provides more efficient processing power with 12 GB of RAM (working memory) and 512 GB of storage memory. Heat dissipation has been improved to limit overheating. Wireless communication is available via Dual Sim 4G/5G, Wi-Fi 6E, BT5.3, NFC, GPS and via cable with USB-C/5Gbps. The stereo speakers have enough volume and sound clear with some economical bass.
Cameras
The main camera has gone from 12 MP to 50 MP, providing better photos, especially in low light. A telephoto lens is missing, an alternative is digital zoom with the main camera. The 12MP wide angle is clearly of lower quality than the main camera. AI is used to optimize the photos.
Software
Android 14 has been installed with a very long 7-year (!) support period until July 2031. The shell is OneUI 6.1.1, with which Samsung gives the device its own face. AI is, as with the S24, strongly present and supplemented with “sketch to image”. A complete AI functional overview becomes visible via Settings. Not everything is yet available in Dutch.
Battery
The battery capacity has been increased from 3700 to 4000 mAh, which is good for a maximum of about 20 hours of continuous internet use. In practice, this means charging every day. This works with 25 watts and will take more than an hour and a half until full. Wireless charging is also possible, but with only 15 watts.
Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy Flip6 offers improvements in design, performance and durability. The compact size and ability to unfold is a nice selling point, but the recommended retail price is quite high for this clever folding technology.
