‘Serious update Tesla Model Y on the way’

According to three of course unnamed insiders, Tesla is working hard on an update for the immensely popular Tesla Model Y. This is not a software update, but physical changes to the interior and exterior. The lower Model 3 also reportedly has to believe it.

According to the rumor, which comes to us via Reuters, it concerns an update that is internally called ‘project Juniper’. From 2024, a Tesla Model Y should be ready with a refreshed interior and exterior. In addition to freshening up the appearance, the (even further) reduction of the number of parts and thus the complexity would also be a goal.

A refresh for the Model Y may seem a bit premature in European eyes, since the car has only been available here since 2021. In the US, however, the car has been on the menu for a year longer, which means that the model will be four years old next year, when production of the updated version starts. Apart from a small update including new headlights and a different center console, there have been no external changes in that time.

What applies to the Model Y almost automatically applies to the Model 3. Apart from dimensions, height and tailgate, these cars are indeed the same in many respects, with updates for one automatically leading to similar changes in the other. For the Tesla Model 3, a similar facelift would be referred to as ‘project Highland’ at Tesla. The production of this car would even start this year, but of course nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

The Tesla Model Y is not only Tesla’s most popular model, but also the most popular EV of all. Worldwide, but also (again) in the Netherlands. With several price reductions, Tesla seems to be doing everything it can to maintain that position, but that also includes keeping the model up to date.
