Shortlist: your own router

Shortlist: your own router

You can almost always connect your own router by using the DMZ of your internet provider’s router. The disadvantage is that your own router does not immediately receive an IP address from the internet provider and that you have a device for nothing. What are your options if you do want your router to be assigned an IP address directly from your internet provider?

6x Modem (/router)

Fritz!Box 7530

Price: € 139,-
https://nl.avm.de/

Do you want a modem/router that is suitable for your vdsl connection, for example as a replacement for an Experia Box? Then the Fritz!Box 7530 is an interesting and affordable choice. The built-in modem is suitable for all standards currently in use over one line (bonding is not supported). In terms of WiFi, you get WiFi 5 in a 2×2 configuration.

An advantage of this Fritz!Box is that KPN’s IP television platform is also supported. In addition, this modem/router is also suitable for telephony and has a built-in DECT switchboard. By the way, AVM is now working on a WiFi6 variant of this router.

Fritz!Box 7583

Price: € 235,-
https://nl.avm.de/

In some cases, the Fritz!Box 7530 falls short, because no bonding is supported. Do you have vdsl in combination with bonding, where two lines are combined into a faster connection? Then the Fritz!Box 7583 is the variant you should have.

This device supports WiFi 5 in a 4×4 configuration. This modem/router is also suitable for telephony and has two analog connections, an ISDN connection and a built-in DECT base station. Naturally, this Fritz!Box also supports KPN’s IP television platform.

Zyxel VMG4005-B50A

Price: € 130,-
www.zyxel.com

Do you have a good router and are you only looking for a vdsl modem, so that your own router is directly assigned an IP address from the internet provider? Then you can go to the Zyxel VMG4005-B50A.

The built-in modem is compatible with all vdsl standards currently in use and also supports bonding. In terms of connections, the device is logically simple. More than one RJ11 for connection to the telephone line and a network connection that you connect to the WAN port of your router you will not get. The modem is configured via a web interface.

Draytek Vigor 165

Price: € 156,-
www.draytek.nl

The Draytek Vigor 165 is also a modem/router equipped with a vdsl modem. The built-in modem is suitable for connections over one telephone line, so bonding is not supported. You can also use the Vigor 165 as a router, but in terms of router it is not such an extensive device.

Interestingly, you can also configure the device to work as a modem. This allows you to connect it to your own router, which then receives an IP address directly from your internet provider. Although the Vigor 165 is a router, the device is not equipped with WiFi.

TP-Link Archer VR400 V3

Price: € 75,-
www.tp-link.com

TP-Links Archer VR400 V3 is a router with a built-in vdsl modem that is suitable for connections without bonding. Compared to some other modem/routers, the Archer VR400 lacks a built-in telephone exchange. The router is equipped with WiFi 5 in a 2×2 configuration.

In terms of router options, you get everything that TP-Link offers with this device. The router has support for IGMP proxy, but it is unknown whether, for example, KPN’s IP television platform really works flawlessly.

Fritz!Box 6660 Cable

Price: € 235,-
https://nl.avm.de/

At the time of writing, despite the decision of the Disputes Committee, it is not possible to connect your own modem (/router) directly to cable internet from Ziggo, for example. If that were possible, then the Fritz!Box 6660 Cable, which is for sale in Germany, for example, has the best credentials.

In addition to a modem that is suitable for Docsis 3.1 and EuroDocsis 3.0, this modem/router is equipped with WiFi 6 (2×2), 4 gigabit LAN ports and one 2.5 gigabit LAN port. The router is also suitable for telephony due to the presence of an analog telephone connection and a built-in DECT base station.

4x Separate routers suitable for IP television

Edge Router 4

Price: € 180,-
www.ui.com

Do you want to hang the NTU with fiber optic or do you have gpon fiber optic? Then you can connect almost any router. If the device supports vlans and – if required – setting up a PPPoE connection, it should work. Do you also want to use IP television? Then you at least need an IGMP proxy on the KPN platform.

The EdgeRouter 4 supports all of the things mentioned. However, the configuration is relatively difficult and the device has no WiFi on board. The EdgeRouter X is a cheaper alternative.

AVM Fritz!Box 4040

Price: € 75,-
https://nl.avm.de/

Fritz!Box routers are easy to configure and work in combination with KPN’s IP television platform, among others. AVM does not sell many routers without a built-in modem, the Fritz!Box 4040 is an exception.

The device is equipped with WiFi 5 in a 2×2 configuration. Do you want something more modern in terms of WiFi or do you need telephony? Many Fritz!Box routers with a built-in modem can also be configured to use a normal WAN connection.

MikroTik hEX S

Price: € 70,-
www.mikrotik.com

MikroTik routers can be configured in such a way that KPN’s IP television platform also works. The MikroTik hEX S is a cheap model that is also equipped with an SFP port. This means you can also connect it directly to an AON fiber optic connection in combination with a suitable SFP module.

Like the aforementioned EdgeRouter, this device is purely a router without WiFi. And this device is also really intended for advanced users, because the configuration is very difficult.

Synology MR2200ac

Price: € 142,-
www.synology.com

In addition to NAS devices, Synology also makes routers, including the MR2200ac. In the latest firmware, Synology has added support for an IGMP proxy. As a result, this router can also route IP television with certain fiber optic providers such as KPN.

The MR2200ac is a WiFi 5 router in a 2×2 configuration. If you have several copies at home, you can also use them as a WiFi mesh system.

4x Direct on fiberglass

Fritz!Box 5530 Fiber AON

Price: €169,-
https://nl.avm.de/

We already described in the MikroTik that it is possible to connect a router directly to an aon fiber optic connection. The Fritz!Box 5530 is bundled with a suitable SFP module.

With support for WiFi 6 (2×2), the router is also completely up to date in the wireless field. In addition, it has a 2.5 gigabit LAN port. The router with an analog telephone connection and built-in DECT base station is also ideal for telephony.

EdgeRouter X SFP

Price: € 80,-
www.ui.com

You can connect the EdgeRouter X SFP in combination with a suitable SFP module directly to an AON fiber optic connection. This router is not equipped with WiFi and the configuration is certainly only for experts in this scenario.

The EdgeRouter X has a total of 1 gigabit bandwidth, dynamically divided over the download and upload of the WAN connection. The EdgeRouter 4 is a more powerful model with sfp port, which does not have this limitation.

Suitable sfp module

Price: From € 8,-
www.fs.com

Please note that not just any fiber optic SFP module will work: the module must support the correct light frequencies. At the KPN fiber optic network the module must comply with TX 1310nm and RX 1490/1550nm and operate with a distance of 14km.

To find combinations that work with your router and internet provider, it’s best to look for experiences from other users. At the specialized web store FS.com you have a large choice.

Fiber Optic Patch Cable

Price: From € 3,-
www.fs.com

Unfortunately, the connection method of the fiber optic to the FTU is not the same everywhere and you can damage fiber relatively easily. That is why we recommend that you use the NTU. Do you want to do without it? Then you need a suitable fiber optic patch cable.

Usually such a cable has an SC connector on the FTU side and a smaller LC connector on the SFP module side. You can connect the cable with a suitable patch cover or a coupling block. Make sure there are blue and green connections, choose the correct plug color to avoid damage.
