Sonos Roam vs Sonos Roam SL: These are the differences

Sonos has announced a variant of the Sonos Roam, the Sonos Roam SL. The Sonos Roam SL is also a bluetooth speaker, but differs from the Roam in a number of important ways. These are the differences between the two speakers.

With the Sonos Move (399 euros), Sonos finally decided in 2019 to take the step to its own, portable speaker that provides the necessary atmosphere at any location, and not just in your own home. Unfortunately, you can’t just put this portable Bluetooth speaker with built-in battery, WiFi and Google Assistant support in a jacket pocket. That problem was solved with the arrival of the Sonos Roam (199 euros) in March of 2021, a compact bluetooth speaker. A smart move, since the competition such as JBL and Ultimate Ears serve a very large target group in that area. Sonos also wants to steal a piece of that target group, and now comes with another compact bluetooth speaker, the Sonos Roam SL. The Roam SL is 20 euros cheaper than the Roam. How did Sonos manage to do that? You will discover that in this comparison.

Sonos Roam vs Sonos Roam SL: The Similarities

  • Waterproof design
  • Dimensions and weight
  • audio
  • Easy installation
  • battery life

design

The Sonos Roam SL and Sonos Roam are similar in most respects. Look at the design, which is almost identical to each other. Both speakers have an IP67 certificate, which means they can survive a meter deep underwater, and that for a maximum of half an hour. So you don’t have to worry immediately if you accidentally drop the speaker in the swimming pool. In addition, both are drop-resistant and dust-proof, so they can take a beating and a bit of dust.

Audio and battery

The Sonos Roam and Roam SL both have the same digital amplifiers and batteries. They can both last 10 hours on a single charge and 10 days in sleep mode and come with two Class-H digital amplifiers, a tweeter and a mid-woofer.

Sonos System

Setting up the Sonos Roam SL is very simple, just like the Roam. You can do this in the Sonos S2 app, if you’re connected to your Wi-Fi network. You can also turn two Sonos Roam speakers into a stereo pair. Note that this only works if the speakers are connected to WiFi. If you walk into the garden from the living room, the speakers will automatically switch to Bluetooth. Support for Apple AirPlay 2 can also be found on both.

Sonos Roam vs Sonos Roam SL: The Differences

  • Control via the Google Assistant
  • Useful Sonos Features
  • Recommended retail price

Voice Control

You can operate the Roam and the Roam SL via the app, or via the buttons on top of the speaker. There is no microphone button on the top of the Roam SL. This variant does not have a microphone. That means that no voice control via a smart assistant is possible on the Roam SL.

Trueplay and Sound Swap

The Sonos Roam SL comes without automatic Trueplay tuning. This function is on the Roam and the larger Sonos Move and adjusts the sound depending on the room in which the speaker is connected. So you can place these Sonos speakers wherever you want, because the device automatically ensures that the sound in the stair case sounds just as good as in the living room. Sonos uses microphones for Trueplay that pick up the reverberation of sound in a room, and indeed, they are not in the Roam SL.

Sound Swap is a completely new feature and lets you easily transfer the music on the Roam to another Sonos speaker in the house. This way you can easily move the music from one room to another. This feature is missing on the Sonos Roam SL.

Price

The Sonos Roam has a suggested retail price of 199 euros and the Sonos Roam SL is for sale for 179 euros.

Conclusion

The Sonos Roam and Sonos Roam are very similar in design, and so are most of the features. Both speakers have the same sound quality and battery life. The main difference is the lack of a microphone on the Roam SL. As a result, voice control is not present and you can only use the bluetooth speaker via the app or the physical buttons on top. The Trueplay function is also not present due to the lack of the microphone. Another important difference is the suggested retail price. There is a difference of 20 euros between the two. Do you not find voice control interesting, and are you not planning to use Trueplay and Sound Swap? Then the Sonos Roam SL is an excellent choice. Do you want these options on a bluetooth speaker? Then you better put down 20 euros more for the Sonos Roam.
