Sony announces LinkBuds, made to hear more than just music

Sony has announced the LinkBuds. Wireless earplugs with ‘innovative sensor technology’ that, in addition to music, should always and everywhere be connected to the world around us. According to Sony, the earplugs are the ideal combination for people who want to listen to music, but also want to continue to hear the environment well.

Listen to music safely

The LinkBuds have, in addition to a finally decent name, a so-called ‘open ring design’. Think of it as a kind of ‘open-ear earplugs’ that don’t block the entire ear canal, like in-ears do. Due to this ‘open ring design’, the earplugs continuously let sound through, so that you can continue to hear the world around you in addition to hearing the music. This can be useful (and especially safe) if you want to listen to music on your bike, for example. According to Sony, these wireless earplugs provide the ideal combination ‘between the online and the offline world’.

Useful functions through bone conduction

The LinkBuds also come with some useful features. This way you can operate the earplugs through bone conduction. This means that you can tap on the side of your ear to control the LinkBuds. For example, with a single tap on the side of your ear you can have your favorite Spotify playlist playing, or you can have the next song played with a double tap.

The wireless earbuds also offer ‘Speak-to-Chat’ support. A function that we also encounter with other wireless earplugs and/or headphones, which ensures that music is paused and sounds ‘from outside’ can be heard better. After you start talking, the Speak-to-Chat will automatically turn on and allow the ambient noise. This should make it possible to have a conversation with someone, without having to remove your earplugs. Although it remains a bit neater to just take your earplugs out of your ears. Yes right?

Waterproof and durability

The Sony LinkBuds have a rating of IPX4, which means that the earplugs are splash-proof. Sweating during sports or a rain shower should therefore not be a problem. However, you must not go swimming with the LinkBuds.

According to Sony, the packaging of the earplugs does not contain any plastic material and the earplugs and the charging case are also made from recycled plastic. Speaking of the charging case, a fully charged charging case provides twelve hours of listening time. The earplugs themselves last a little longer than five hours, according to Sony, and offer support for fast charging. Ten minutes of charging provides 90 minutes of listening pleasure.

Price and availability

You can get the LinkBuds for 180 euros. You can choose from the colors white and anthracite/grey. The earplugs will be in stores from the end of this month.
