The bullet is through the church: tech manufacturer Sony is also going to enter the electric car market. The company will immediately show two study models at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: the Vision-S 01 and the Vision-S 02.

Sony already showed the Vision-S two years ago at CES, a study model that looked like a preview of a first car from the company. Shortly afterwards, Sony made it clear that it had no plans to actually build cars, but it is now coming back to that. In the spring of this year, Sony will set up Sony Mobility, a branch of the company with which Sony wants to enter the EV market.

In Las Vegas, Sony shows the Vision-S 01 and the Vision S-02. The Vision-S 01 is a revised version of the Vision S from two years ago. The Vision-S 02 is a more SUV-like derivative of that. The two models share their platform with each other.

The Vision-S 01 is 4.9 meters long and has a wheelbase of a generous 3.03 meters. The four-seater with a steeply sloping roofline is four-wheel drive thanks to two electric motors of 272 hp each and should be able to accelerate from standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Its top speed: 240 km/h. Sony does not share information about the battery pack for the time being. SUV brother Vision-S 02 shares its length and wheelbase with the Vision-S 01, but is obviously a lot higher. This four-seater, but also as a seven-seater SUV-like, also has two 272 hp electric motors each and must be able to reach a speed of 180 km/h.

According to Sony, the platform of the pair is not based on that of any other company and would be suitable for sedans, SUVs and MPVs. Of course Sony stuffs the cars with displays, smart software and 5G connectivity. The pair are equipped with lidar sensors and numerous cameras and sensors and must be able to find their way through traffic autonomously (level 2+). Sony says it is already testing the cars on public roads in Europe. The conceptual pair look remarkably production-ready both inside and out. It is not yet known when and where Sony will market the models. At least that won’t happen this year.
