After a few tough months, Spanish car sales finally note a small plus again. Compared to a year earlier, 1.1 percent more Spaniards bought a new car.
This is shown by figures from the Spanish Association for cars and trucks ANFAC. In total, 117,929 new cars went over the proverbial Spanish counters. Individuals in particular managed to find their way back to the dealers. With 61,931 purchase contracts, that part of the market increased by 6.9 percent. Businesses just missed last year’s level (-0.2 percent), the rental market still ends in deep red with a 15 percent drop.
Although this is a small boost, sales figures in Spain as a whole remain dramatic. Until July, the market shrank by 43 percent as only 457,782 cars got new owners. With the first positive month of sales, the Spanish government’s rescue attempt seems to be helping. She allocated € 3.75 billion to help the auto industry.
The Renault Clio was the most popular model in the Iberian Peninsula in July. Spanish Renault dealers license 2,854 copies. The Clio is closely followed by the Dacia Sandero (2,840), Peugeot 2008 (2,550) and the Seat Leon (2,545). Seen over the first seven months of this year, Leon does the best in terms of sales, with 12,206 units. The Sandero also ranks second in this list (11,511), followed by the Clio with a total of 10,742 units sold.
