Music streaming service Spotify places information labels with podcasts about Covid-19. These labels direct listeners of these podcasts to factual information about corona.
Information labels at corona podcasts
Daniel Ek, the founder of Spotify, explains that the music streaming service has received many questions in recent days about their platform policy regarding the spread of disinformation via podcasts on the platform. The information labels are used to ‘combat disinformation’. They cite, among other things, reliable sources and data-driven facts from scientists, doctors, academics and health authorities around the world. “This new effort to fight misinformation will be rolled out to countries around the world in the coming days,” Elk said.
Spreading fake news via Spotify
Comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast gave rise to these labels. The Joe Rogan Experienceas the podcast is called, can be listened exclusively via Spotify and attracts about eleven million listeners. Many musicians including Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have taken their music off Spotify in protest, because they believe Rogan is spreading fake news.
This protest action has led to a significant drop in Spotify’s market value. Despite this, Spotify says that since the start of the pandemic over twenty thousand podcast episodes related to COVID-19 removed.
The streaming service also has platform rules published that are kept up-to-date with experts on dangerous, unreliable, sensitive and illegal content. This includes content that promotes dangerous, incorrect or misleading medical information that could cause harm or pose a direct threat to public health.
