Sometimes you have to turn off your iPad or iPhone completely. That seems like a simple job, but since the introduction of Face ID it has sometimes been difficult. The cause of this is the behavior of the side button, also called the power button.
You would expect that holding down the side button should be enough to turn off the device. However, this is not the case and Siri is activated. That is why Apple has introduced button combinations, but you can also switch off the device in other ways.
Turn off iPad or iPhone
You can switch off your iPhone or iPad in several ways: directly via the buttons or via the settings of the device. A distinction is made between an iPhone or iPad with a home button or a device where the front consists entirely of a screen and uses Face ID or Touch ID in the side button.
iPhone or iPad without home button
Press one of the two volume buttons and the side button simultaneously until the ‘turn off’ screen appears. Swipe the power button to the right to switch off the device.
Turn off iPad or iPhone with home button
Do you still have an iPhone or iPad with a home button (round button at the bottom of the screen)? You can then switch off the device by pressing and holding the on/off button. A turn off banner will then appear at the top of the screen. Swipe it to the right to turn off the device.
Disable via Settings
Open Settings ▸ navigate to ‘General’ ▸ Tap ‘Turn off’ at the bottom. Immediately the power off screen will be shown and you can use the slide switch to turn off your iPhone or iPad.
Power button in Control Center
From iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 you can use a completely new control panel. You get complete freedom to adjust the controls and arrange the panel according to your own preferences. Thanks to this change, Apple has decided to introduce a convenient power button. We explain where you can find these.
- Open the control panel
- A standby button will appear in the top right corner
- Place your finger on the power button for a few moments
- The power off screen is displayed
- Use the power off slide switch to turn off the device
Turn on again
