Five brands, eight models and up to 800 kilometers of range
Stellantis spreads its electric models across not one or two, nor three, but four different modular platforms. It now highlights the STLA Large platform, which will find a place among large electric SUVs and perhaps among large sedans.
Stellantis has devised four modular platforms for electric cars of different sizes. The smallest of them is called STLA Small and is intended for cars the size of the Peugeot 208. Models such as the new 3008 and the yet-to-be-revealed 5008 are on a modular platform called STLA Medium. A third variant is called STLA Frame and should house pick-ups and commercial vehicles, among other things. The fourth is called STLA Large, a scalable base that will include large SUVs and even sedans.
The STLA Large platform is suitable for cars with a length of 4.76 to 5.13 meters and a width of 1.9 to 2.03 meters. The distance between the front and rear axles of the electric cars on Stellantis’ STLA Large base is 2.87 to 3.08 meters. So these are certainly not compact models. The STLA Large base is available with 400 volts and 800 volts on-board voltage. The largest battery pack that Stellantis can squeeze in has a capacity of 118 kW. The smallest batteries in STLA Large-based cars have up to 85 kWh of batteries on board.
The fastest electric cars on the platform should be able to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in about 2 seconds. Relevant? No, but undoubtedly fun for the speed demons in Autoland. More interesting is the electric range that the platform makes possible. Stellantis talks about cars with a range of up to 800 kilometers. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive? It must all be possible. Like the other STLA platforms, the STLA Large base is also suitable for combustion engines.
Not all Stellantis brands will use the STLA Large platform. The group does say that five brands will jointly introduce no fewer than eight electric models in the D and E segments on the modular platform between 2024 and 2026. Jeep and Dodge are the first brands to use the platform. Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Chrysler follow. Alfa Romeo is launching an electric successor to the Guilia and also has a large electric SUV in the pipeline. We expect these to be STLA Large based models.
