Straighten horizon in a photo

Straighten horizon in a photo A skewed horizon in a photo does not look so good. Fortunately, it is very easy to straighten the horizon. This is possible in Windows or on the Mac and in Android or iOS.

It happens to everyone sometimes. A nice photo of the sunset turns out to be a bit skewed afterwards. Fortunately, a skewed horizon can be fixed in a few clicks.

Windows 10 comes with the free Photos app by default. Small photo edits are possible here.

Restoring the horizon goes like this:

  • Open the file location of the photo on the PC.
  • Right click on the photo and click Edit with Photos.
  • On the right side of the screen you will see ‘Straighten’.
  • Click on the blue ball and keep the mouse pressed. Drag left or right to tilt the photo. The guides help you determine if the horizon is straight. Release the mouse button when you are satisfied.
  • Click on Reset if you want to try again.
  • click on Save a copy to save the photo.
  • Rename the copy.
  • click on Save.

In macOS, the Photos app lets you do some easy photo editing.

Straightening the horizon is done as follows:

  • Open the Photos program.
  • Double click on the photo you want to edit.
  • Click on the top right edit.
  • click on crop.
  • To the right of the photo is a semicircle with degrees.
  • Click on it, hold down the mouse button and drag to tilt the photo.
  • When you are ready, click on Ready.
  • Right click on the photo and click Edit with Photos.

With Android phones it is also possible to straighten the horizon. These steps have been tested on a device with Android 10:

  • Open the Gallery app.
  • Tap the photo you want to edit.
  • Tap the pencil icon.
  • At the bottom you see a row with all stripes, with a yellow stripe in the middle. Swipe your finger on this bar to tilt the photo.
  • When you are satisfied, tap Save.

Apple’s Photos app also works on iPhones and iPads. Straightening the horizon goes like this:

  • Tap the app photos.
  • Tap the photo you want to edit.
  • The photo appears large. Tap on Change.
  • Tap the crop tool Photos crop tool.
  • With some photos, the app immediately recognizes that the horizon is skewed. This is then automatically corrected.
  • Do you want to (still) adjust the photo yourself? Next to or below the photo is a line with dashes. Keep your finger on the line and swipe the screen. The photo is gridded and rotated. Straighten the horizon using the grid lines.
  • Satisfied? Tap on Ready. Don’t want to make the edit? Then tap cancel > Delete changes.
