Suzuki recalls Hayabusa, ABS module union nut may not be properly tightened

Suzuki has rolled out a recall for the GSX-R1300 Hayabusa, which were produced in the second half of 2023. Internal quality control revealed that the union nuts on the ABS unit may not have been tightened to the correct torque, which could cause the nuts to loosen and cause brake fluid to leak.

Suzuki recalls Hayabusa, ABS module union nut may not be properly tightened

During a quality inspection of the braking system on December 13, 2023 at the production plant in Hamamatsu, in which the brake is pressurized by applying the brakes, Suzuki discovered a leak at the ABS module after approximately four hours. The area of the leak was further investigated, which revealed that the union nuts of the pipes in the ABS unit had not been properly tightened.

The shipment was immediately stopped and a further investigation was initiated, which revealed that a production employee responsible for installing the brake lines in the ABS module had deviated from the standard installation procedure as instructed.

According to the standard procedure, tightening the union nuts of two specific brake lines required 2 to 3 individual movements of the torque wrench due to the limited space around the ABS module, but the relevant production employee deviated from the procedure and tightened them with one movement. However, in this way it was possible that the torque wrench made contact with an intake pipe of the engine block and the union nut was not tightened with the correct torque.

The investigation showed that the documentation of the assembly process had not been very clear and that the production employee had not received sufficient training, which led to the assembly error.

Suzuki then inspected the fleet of Hayabusas ready for shipment and confirmed that some of the 551 engines had not had their union nuts tightened securely enough. The union nuts on all engines were then inspected and tightened to the correct torque. In no engine had the improperly tightened union nut led to a leak.

Because prevention is still better than cure, Suzuki has now rolled out a recall for the production batch of the GSX-R1300 Hayabusa from between July 7, 2023 and November 28, 2023.
