At the height of up to 2,600 meters, the stone pine, which has their homeland mainly in the central Alps, is located. It endures the rough climate for many centuries and can withstand temperatures up to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Supposedly, the resistant needle tree can live up to 1,000 years old and reaches up to 30 meters high. The Swiss stone pine is particularly valued.

For example, furniture and stone pine balls are made from the material as a closure for carafes. Through its fragrance, Zirbenholz is intended to improve the quality of sleep, among other things.

Properties of the stone pine

Because of the hard living conditions, the stone pine grows very slowly. But it forms a soft wood with even density. The stone pine has a yellowish tone and was used early on because of its lively grain for the interior paneling of rooms. The wood is firmer than that of other conifers, but can still be processed well. It remains for a long time and is considered the lightest of the conifers – compared to spruce wood, for example.

As early as the 17th century, Zinbenholz was used for wall hooks and carvings. Material rooms were lined with stubborn rooms, and stone pine was often used as roof shingles in the alpine room.

Characteristic for the Swiss stone pine is its characteristic resin fragrance: the pleasant, warm smell of numerous wooden, essential oils stays in the wood for decades.

Swiss stone pine for well -being

The Swiss pine has long been a remedy, for example to separate wounds and kill germs. However, scientific facts are not sufficiently researched or occupied. Nevertheless, the Swiss pine continues to be used in South Tyrol, Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland to increase well -being:

  • You will find stone pine in many environments, from the traditional dining room to the wellness sauna to modern living room or bedrooms, as construction or furniture wood, with artists: inside for carvings
  • Or as a pine pillow for the bedroom. Tip: If you buy a stone pine from planed stone pine or do it yourself, you should not put it right next to your head for the first few days so that your nose and your body can slowly get used to the smell.

As already mentioned in the first paragraph, Zirbenholz should ensure better sleep due to the calming effect

Sleeping: How healthy is Swiss pine really?

The essential oils in the Harz are supposed to promote healthy and deep sleep. To date, however, the effect of stone pine is relatively sparse:

  • A study in the context of an Austrian diploma thesis came to the conclusion that the inhalation of pine oil can have a calming influence.
  • Other international studies have also confirmed the positive effects of the Swiss pine on our sleep. They have dealt with the effect of alpha pins and 3-cars. The two essential oils occur in pine wood and demonstrably have a positive impact on sleep in animal experiments. Since the stone pine belongs to the pine plants and has similar connections, one could conclude that the Swiss stone pine also has a positive effect on sleep.
  • An Austrian team of researchers came to the conclusion that there are no meaningful results as to whether a bed made of stone pine actually improves the quality of sleep. In addition, research was only carried out to 15 participants – far too little to get a meaningful result.

It cannot be said in concrete terms whether stone pine actually ensures a relaxing sleep. Further meaningful research results are required.

Zirbenholz: What about sustainability?

The stone pine plants itself with great success with the help of the pine. However, climate change is a danger: the Swiss pine could extend locally due to the increasing temperatures. This applies above all to lower layers. The inventory is still considered secure and the Swiss stone pine is also classified as not endangered.

If you want to buy a product from stone pine, you should always find out about the origin and quality and make sure to buy a high-quality solid wood product. The quality seal for wood is, for example, the FSC seal or the environmental sign “Blue Angel”.

Standard wood has its price: For a stone wood bed, the prices are often between 700 and 2,500 euros. Storage balls are available from 15 euros (for example at the avocadoostore). Swiss stone pine has increased very much in the past few years due to the increasing popularity.
