The Apple Watch Series 9 is Apple’s latest smartwatch, but what if you still have a Series 7? You will get these improvements after switching!
Switching from the Apple Watch Series 7 to the 9
The Apple Watch Series 7 was released two and a half years ago and the Series 9 is over six months old. Both smart watches have many similarities, but there are also a number of differences. For those who want to switch from the Series 7 to the 9, we list the differences.
For starters, the Apple Watch Series 7 is available in aluminum (Midnight, Starlight, Green, Blue, Red), stainless steel (Gold, Silver, and Graphite), and titanium (Space Black, Titanium).
The Series 9 is only available in aluminum (Starlight, Midnight, Silver, Red and Pink) and stainless steel (Gold, Silver and Graphite).
Screen brightness
The screens of both Apple Watches are largely similar: they have the same dimensions, the same resolution and the same pixel density. Yet there is a difference, namely in the brightness or the number of nits. The Apple Watch Series 7 has a maximum brightness of 1000 nits, while the Series 9 has a maximum brightness of 2000 nits.
Internal storage space
Another difference you’ll notice after switching from the Apple Watch Series 7 to the Series 9 is the amount of storage space. With the Series 7 this is 32 GB as standard, with the Series 9 you have twice as much storage space with 64 GB.
The Double tap function
The Double Tap feature makes it possible to operate your Apple Watch with one hand when you cannot use your other hand. The function is part of watchOS 10.1 and only works on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. You cannot use Double Tap on the Apple Watch Series 7. You can use a similar option in Accessibility, but it works a lot less well.
A temperature sensor
Unlike the Apple Watch Series 7, the Apple Watch Series 9 has a temperature sensor. This way, your Apple Watch can collect wrist temperature data while you sleep and give you insight into your overall well-being. After about five nights, the Apple Watch determines the basic temperature of your wrist and detects changes. A temperature sensor can only be found on the Apple Watch Series 8 and on the Apple Watch Ultra 1 and Ultra 2.
By switching from the Series 7 to the Series 9, you also go from Bluetooth 5.0 to Bluetooth 5.3. However, the chance that you will notice this is extremely small. On paper there is also a difference in the chipset used. The Apple Watch Series 7 uses the S7 and the Series 9 uses the S9. In practice, however, there is no difference at all between these two chipsets.
