Up to 300 km optimistic range
The Indian Tata presents a new EV in its home country. This compact Tata Tiago.ev is very affordable and also has quite acceptable performance.
The Tata Tiago – not to be confused with the Volkswagen Taigo – is basically not new at all. The model has been around since 2016 and received a facelift in 2020, just like its sedan brother Tigor. There was already an electric version of the Tigor, the hatchback Tiago is now available. The Taigo.ev (that dot is part of the type designation) strongly resembles its three-cylinder driven starting point on the outside. We do see a closed grille, a striking motif in the lower air intake and here and there some blue color accents. At 3.77 meters, the Tata Taigo is about 7 cm longer than the new Toyota Aygo X.
The electric Tiago is available with two different powertrains. The basic version has a battery pack of 19.2 kWh and an output of about 61 hp (45 kW). At an additional cost, there is a version that can carry 24 kWh of electricity. The power is also a bit higher here, because just like the four-door Tigor, this version produces 75 hp. Both variants can simply be used on the fast charger with a CCS connection, where they would peak at 50 kW.
The range is interesting. Tata states that the basic version should go 250 km on a battery charge, while the more expensive variant would even last 315 km. However, that is measured according to the Indian MIDC cycle and that seems quite optimistic with the mentioned lung capacity. By way of comparison: the cheapest electric car on the European market, the Dacia Spring, can theoretically last 230 km with 25 kWh. So count on a comparable range for the Tiago with 25 kWh, or actually slightly less.
Compared to the Spring, the Tiago does have one big advantage: its price. Where a Spring in Europe should cost almost 21 mille, even in basic form, the brave Taigo in India is already ready for you for converted €10,600. The most luxurious version with the largest battery pack still costs only €14,800, which makes it seem like a great deal. The equipment is also fine: the Tiago has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control and is even equipped with automatic climate control as standard. An app is also part of it, so that all kinds of things can be monitored via the smartphone.
We are therefore curious about your opinion: would this Tata Tiago have a chance on the European market? Could this be the affordable EV we’ve been waiting for so long? Let me know!
