Temporarily remove apps to install software update

If you need to update your iPhone or iPad, you may not have enough free storage space to update the software. You can then temporarily remove apps to install the software update.

Games, videos and the photo library in particular can cause you to run out of storage space. Fortunately, Apple is here to help and you can free up storage space by clearing apps just before installing the update.

Temporarily remove apps for software update

If you don’t have enough storage space to download and install a software update, iOS or iPadOS may suggest temporarily removing apps. The software will then automatically clean up applications that are taking up too much storage space, such as games that are several GB in size. As soon as there is enough storage space, the software can be updated.

After performing the update, iOS or iPadOS will automatically redownload the applications so you can use them again.

Removing the apps only deletes the application itself, but preserves the data and settings. This allows the app to be downloaded again after updating the software and used in its ‘original’ state.

Manually clean up apps

Don’t want iOS or iPadOS to automatically delete apps? Then you can also manually remove applications temporarily by cleaning them up. The cleanup option is standard on the iPhone and iPad and is useful to apply to applications that you would like to keep in your overview, but do not always use. This way you can easily free up space, without deleting data and settings.

  • Open Settings
  • Navigate to ‘General’
  • Tap on ‘iPhone/iPad Storage’
  • Find the app you want to clean up in the list
  • Select ‘Clean up’
