Exactly one year after the unveiling of the Model Y, Tesla started supplying the compact SUV. In the Netherlands we still have to be patient, but due to the started delivery, more has become known about the Model Y.
Tesla proudly sends out a video to announce that U.S. Model Y delivery has begun. In flashy images we shoot from Tesla’s Gigafactory to the public road, a forest path and a frozen lake. To make it clear: Tesla is ready!
Since customers are getting their new Model Y, the instruction manual of the electric SUV also made public. That 225-page document is also interesting for us, because now we learn a lot more about the car. For example, it was still unknown how big he was exactly. A diagram in the document offers a solution. The carriage measures 4.75 m in length, has a 2.89 m wheelbase and is 1.92 m wide (without mirrors). The height of the ruler is 1.62 m. In the back seat, the legroom is exactly 1.00 m long. 1.9 cubic meters of luggage space can be filled in the trunk.
If we park the Model Y next to the Model 3, then after a year of waiting we “finally” know how big the difference between the brothers is. The Model 3 is 4.69 m long and has an almost equally long wheelbase of 2.86 m. The biggest difference is of course in height: the Model 3 is 1.44 m high. The Model 3 delivers 8 cm in width. Compared to the larger Model X, the Model Y is 29 cm shorter and 6 cm lower.
If we include the competitors, he will take on the Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes-Benz EQC rather than cars like the Audi E-tron. For example, the I-Pace is 4.68 m long, the EQC is 4.76 m. The EQC also has an equally long height of 1.62 m. The Audi is really a size bigger with a length of 4.90 m. width, the Model Y fits better with the E-tron (Audi: 1.94 m). If we take a Volkswagen ID.3, for example, it is clearly of a completely different size with its length of 4.26 m. Also in terms of height (1.55 m), the German does not really come close to the Model Y .
For the time being, the Model Y is coming to our country as Long Range and as Performance. The first reaches 505 km (WLTP), the Performance is 25 km less. The Performance does get a higher peak of 241 km / h and only needs 3.7 seconds to reach 100 km / h from a standstill. The Long Range takes 5.1 seconds and cannot exceed 217 km / h. Prices start at € 64,000 for the Longe Range and € 70,000 for the Performance. In 2022, Tesla says it will start producing the cheaper Standard Range. The first Models Y should come to our country in early 2021.
