‘Tesla uses European stainless steel for Cybertruck’

The Tesla Cybertruck is a large pickup and therefore primarily a North American affair. Yet this remarkable vehicle reportedly has a European flavor: the main ingredient comes from Europe.

The Tesla Cybertruck is extremely unusual in shape and largely made of stainless steel. According to Bloomberg, that stainless steel is purchased from the Finnish Outokumpu. That doesn’t seem like a crazy choice, because judging by its website, the company focuses almost entirely on the production of stainless steel in all kinds of forms. Outokumpu is even said to be the largest European player in that field this list in third place worldwide.

Tesla as a customer is probably not bad news for Outokumpu, because the American car manufacturer rarely manages to keep its products exclusive. This rumor does not rule out that Tesla will approach more than one supplier for stainless steel, so it does not have to be an exclusive deal. Moreover, Outokumpu’s Finnish origin does not necessarily mean that the stainless steel in question actually comes from Finland, because the company also has a factory in Alabama.

The Tesla Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019, but in typical Tesla practice, development had only just begun. It was recently announced that the first production model is a fact, which still does not mean that series production has actually started.
