That’s how economical the Opel Astra (2015-2021) is in practice

If you look at the current Opel Astra L, you see a car that is technically almost identical to the Peugeot 308. They share their platform, infotainment and engines. How different that was with the previous generation, the Astra K, which was mainly supplied with ‘own’ petrol and diesel engines. Is it a pity that Opel has waved goodbye to these engines or were they secretly not that economical? We look it up in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor.

Petrol engines in the Astra K are the three-cylinder 1.0 Turbo with 105 hp, a four-cylinder 1.4 Turbo with 150 hp and the 200 hp 1.6 Turbo. Dieseling is possible with the 1.6 CDTi with 110 or 136 hp and top diesel 1.6 BiTurbo with 160 hp. Since 2019, the 1.6 CDTis have been replaced by the three-cylinder 1.5 CDTi, indicating that this is not a renamed 1.5 BlueHDI from the Stellantis stables. Only the 1.2 Turbo introduced in the same year has a lot of technical similarities with the 1.2 PureTech from Stellantis…

How economical are Astra 1.0 and 1.4 Turbo?

Let’s start with the two most interesting petrol engines. Owners of an Opel Astra 1.0 Turbo drive their cars on average 1 in 16.4, which corresponds to 6.1 l/100 km. Half of these cars are Sports Tourer station wagons, the others are five-door hatchbacks. The difference in fuel consumption between the two body styles appears to be negligible. Based on the available data, the station wagon has a higher consumption of 200 ml per 100 kilometers compared to the hatchback.

The 1.4 Turbo is, as expected, less economical. This engine uses an average of 6.8 l / 100 kilometers, or 1 in 14.9. The most economical driver has been driving for more than 86,000 km with an average consumption of 1 in 17, the most economical ‘does’ a consumption of 1 in 13.4 for 15,000 kilometers. With the 1.0 Turbo, the lowest and highest values are 1 at 18.9 and 1 at 14.8 respectively.

Consumption Astra 1.6 CDTI

When we sweep together the Astra 1.6 CDTi variants with 110 and 136 hp, the result is an average consumption of 4.99 l / 100 km. Just better than 1 in 20, which is very reasonable for a modern diesel engine. The bandwidth ranges from 1 in 22.9, measured over more than 100,000 km, to 1 in 16.4.

The diesel-powered Astras perform at a comparable level to the TDIs in the Skoda Octavia, which appeared earlier in this section. The three-cylinder petrol engine from Skoda is a bit more economical with fuel. However, the Astra does slightly better than the Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost.
