Never say never
Volkswagen has the ID Buzz, Volvo is launching the EM90 and Alfa Romeo may also soon have a large electric MPV-like one. It’s still too early to say that it will happen, but it certainly doesn’t seem ruled out.
Especially far outside Europe, the large MPV has never really gone away. In large parts of Asia and also in the United States, the practical space giants have never actually gone away. However, the MPV also seems to be gaining some ground in Europe. Volkswagen has the electric ID Buzz and Lexus recently also produced a large MPV. Although the Lexus LM will not come to the Netherlands, the Japanese will sell it in Europe. Not every manufacturer dares to re-enter the segment of large MPVs in Europe. For example, Volvo’s electric MPV will not come to Europe. If we can believe the words of Alfa Romeo’s design boss Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, reported by the English Autocar, an electric MPV is something that is keeping Alfa Romeo’s minds to a certain extent.
In conversation with Autocar, Alfa’s design chief said in summary about the Alfa Romeo Romeo ‘Autotutto’ – a van family from a bygone era – that it “was a beautiful thing” and that “[…] You shouldn’t be surprised if something like this returns.” Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos does not immediately confirm that there will actually be a new large spacious Alfa, but given the small revival of MPVs, a luxurious MPV from Alfa Romeo does not seem like such a bad idea. In any case, Alfa’s parent company Stellantis will soon reveal its future plans in the field of commercial vehicles. Perhaps there will be a new space giant parked on a variant of the STLA platform on which Alfa Romeo could base its electric MPV.
