If you still have the first generation AirPods, they are now officially ‘vintage’ according to Apple. But what do they actually mean by that?
The first AirPods are now vintage
Apple has a lot of products and over time support for each of those products ends. On the website Apple has a list of all products that are ‘vintage’.
By vintage, Apple means products that stopped selling more than five years ago and less than seven years ago. That means the first-generation AirPods have now been added to this list. Apple Stores will continue to perform AirPod repairs for up to two years after this date. Of course, this is dependent on the available inventory.
After “vintage” comes “obsolete.” This is when it has been more than seven years since a product was sold by Apple. Once a product has reached this stage, Apple Stores will no longer perform repairs.
Incidentally, the first generation Airpods are not the only Apple product that has now ended up on the vintage list. The iPhone X has also been given a spot. Furthermore, the first HomePod (the one from 2017) has also become vintage.
This is when the first AirPods came out
Apple officially announced the first version of the AirPods in September 2016. The wireless earbuds then released in December 2016. The earbuds were an instant hit thanks to their flawless integration into Apple’s ecosystem.
