Rumors about a foldable iPhone have been around for years. The first iPhone Fold is now a fact and it is not made by Apple.
iPhone Fold — over 200 days of trying
The Chinese YouTuber “Scientific and technological aesthetics” has succeeded in making the first iPhone Fold. It took his team more than 200 days and 37 iPhone screens, but the iPhone V (as they call it) folds shut.
The goal of the YouTubers was to use as many original iPhone parts as possible in the foldable iPhone. The video shows the team getting one step closer to the iPhone V. The video is in Chinese, but English subtitles are available.
New iPhone Fold parts: smaller battery
To get everything to fit in the foldable iPhone, several parts have been redesigned. For example, components were made with a 3D printer and a new (smaller) battery was designed. This battery has a capacity of only 1000 mAh, a quarter of most iPhones. One of the worst iPhone batteries ever according to the video, but at least it works.
Because the foldable device consists of two parts, the developers were faced with a major challenge. They had to divide the parts in such a way that the phone could be folded. They mainly managed to do this by removing certain hardware from the device. For example, the iPhone V lacks one speaker and it cannot be charged wirelessly.
iOS for foldable iPhone V
The developers didn’t stop after they succeeded in making a foldable iPhone. iOS was also overhauled, so that the operating system works with a foldable screen. In this modified version of iOS, it is possible to split the screen and use two apps at the same time. This is similar to the split screenfeature on the iPad.
Foldable iPad coming in 2024
This first ‘iPhone V’ comes a few days after rumors of a foldable iPad, rather than a foldable iPhone. According to Samsung, Apple will introduce an iPad Fold in 2024. It is not known how much an Apple foldable device would cost, but according to rumors you should expect a price of about 2500 dollars. Which, by the way, is not far from the most expensive iPhone 14 Pro Max today.
