Hello Abraham
Garlands, cake and a huge Abraham doll in the front garden: exactly fifty years ago to the day, the very first Volkswagen Golf rolled off the series production line.
Yes: on March 29, 1974, the very first Volkswagen Golf rolled off the production line, at least the very first series-produced Golf. That is a moment to reflect on, even though the real glory days of the Golf seem to be behind us. No fewer than 37 million Golfs were built in exactly fifty years, but the average of 2,000 units per day will no longer be achieved in 2024 with all the focus on EVs and SUVs.
In the Netherlands, 875,000 Golfs have been registered in all these years, and Volkswagen states that there are still approximately 310,000 of them on the road. We are currently working on the eighth generation of the Golf, which has continued to evolve in appearance and is therefore still recognizable as such. This applies less to the interior due to a significant decline in digitization, but improvements have been promised in that area and have already been partly implemented.
And the future of the Gulf? It seemed a bit uncertain with the presentation of the electric alternative in 2019 – the ID3 – but it is now looking brighter again. Volkswagen appears to want to eventually merge the names of its electric and traditional models, so that subsequent generations of the Golf can appear again. On to 100, then!
