Google plans to heavily integrate Fitbit into its new Pixel Watch smartwatch, but what does that actually mean for the Fitbit app and Google Fit? These are apps that now exist independently of each other. For now, nothing is happening at all.
Fitbit and Google Fit
Fitbit co-founder James Park said in an interview with CNET that the Fitbit app does not replace the Google Fit app. They will coexist for a while, because Park is aware that each app has its own user groups. “I think Google Fit and the Fitbit app will continue as they are for now – I don’t think we want to interrupt the experience for either user group. Those groups, which are quite large, love the app they use for a variety of reasons. For now, we see no reason to change that.”
Note his use of the word ‘provisional’, because that can mean anything, of course. Still, he probably won’t mean it’s until the launch of Pixel Watch and then no more. However, he does not say that the apps will always coexist. So there will probably really be a time when the apps will merge, probably by having one app copy more and more of the other app. Yet that is only speculation: for now, he has only said that the apps really will continue to operate side by side.
Fitness on your Pixel
Google bought Fitbit in 2019 and we’ve actually seen few major integrations within the Google ecosystem so far. However, that seems to be about to change as the new Pixel Watch gets deep integration with Fitbit and the fitness section within that app. For example, an earlier WearOS device, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, has no Fitbit integration at all.
What James Park did add to the conversation was the statement that Google services will probably play a greater role on Fitbit’s devices. So it’s kind of like crossing the road. In any case, Fitbit will remain busy with the Versa and Sense gadgets for the time being, because these are affordable and offer good battery life. Besides that, of course, it must focus on the lawsuits that people have started after they suffered burns from the wearables.
