The Function Keys in Windows

Each keyboard has the keys F1 to F12. Those are the Function keys. They all have their own function.

The keys are similar to keyboard shortcuts: when you press them, something happens in Windows or in the programs you have open. So what happens when you press a key depends on what you are doing.

Here are some common features:

  • F1: open the help function
  • F2: Rename a selected folder or file
  • F3: Search for a file or folder
  • F5: Refresh the page in an Internet program (Find and Replace in Word)
  • F7: spell check (in Word)
  • F8: select text, for that you have to press this key a few times (in Word)
  • F10: Activate the Menu bar in the active program
  • F12: Open the Save As window (in Word)
