The rumors are true: Audi is in the process of acquiring McLaren. The German brand wants to enter Formula 1 in a few years and is therefore buying the McLaren team. However, don’t think that the British company’s sports car branch is out of the question. This is also part of the takeover and will be integrated into the Volkswagen Group.

Audi and Porsche want to enter Formula 1, that’s no secret; they will probably develop a Formula 1 powertrain together. It is reported that Porsche will become an engine supplier to Red Bull from 2026. Audi chooses a different route: the takeover of the McLaren team. According to the British magazine Car, talks between the companies are in full swing. Investors in McLaren would be willing to sell their interests to Audi.

The Volkswagen Group benefits from synergy benefits with McLaren

But what should the Volkswagen group do with another sports car brand in addition to Lamborghini and Porsche? The German car giant recently said goodbye to Bugatti. According to Car, there would be synergy benefits in the purchase of McLaren. The Volkswagen Group can then spread development costs over Bentley, Lamborghini and McLaren. Audi would also like to take the wind out of their sails. Both BMW and Geely have entered into takeover talks with McLaren.

McLaren has lost millions due to the corona crisis

The British sports car maker has been badly affected by the corona outbreak. McLaren went from £91 million profit in 2019 to £223 million loss in 2020. Last year the number of McLarens sold fell by 64 percent! The ailing manufacturer has laid off over 800 people, sold its headquarters and issued new shares to save/raise money.
