We already know this about the iPhone 16E
Although the name is different than expected, we still expect the iPhone 16E in the spring. We list everything we already know about the new budget iPhone for you.
The iPhone 16E is based on the design of the iPhone 14. The device also has a notch, Face ID and a 6.1-inch OLED display. It runs on an A18 chip, which means Apple Intelligence is supported. It also has a USB-C connection, a single 48 MP camera and, for the first time, a 5G modem that Apple has produced itself.
These innovations make it the biggest upgrade in the history of the iPhone SE. Apple has not made any changes to the design since the 2nd generation in 2020. The iPhone SE 2022 looks the same, but has an A15 Bionic chip and support for 5G. The new version will therefore be the first major iPhone SE renewal in five years.
This way, Apple may be able to keep the price low
The iPhone SE 2022 came on the market at the time for a starting price of 529 euros. However, it remains to be seen whether the new version will be available for the same price. The iPhone 14 currently costs €616.81 and the iPhone 15 €764. A newer iPhone with parts from these two devices and an even newer chipset cannot actually be cheaper.
Still, there are two things that could lower the cost of the iPhone 16E for Apple. To start with, the 5G modem that Apple produced itself. This means that they no longer need Qualcomm’s expensive modems. Secondly, Apple saves by not using OLEDs from Samsung, but from BOE and LG.
These two things are among the most expensive parts of the iPhone. It is therefore very possible that Apple can offer the iPhone 16E cheaper and still make enough money from it. But the question remains whether this will actually happen in practice.
The iPhone 16E may become more expensive
If the iPhone SE 4 does indeed cost 529 euros, that is more than 400 euros less than the iPhone 16 of 969 euros. For the extra price of the iPhone 16, you actually only get a Dynamic Island, an action button and an ultra-wide-angle camera. The iPhone SE 4 sounds like far too good a deal.
The name iPhone 16E is therefore a logical step. People expect a low price for an SE iPhone, but an iPhone 16E for 649 euros still sounds very reasonable. Moreover, Apple emphasizes that the iPhone 15 is an outdated iPhone, without support for Apple Intelligence (even though it is more expensive than the iPhone 16E, which does support AI). It remains to be seen how much the iPhone 16E will actually cost.
