The majority of Dutch people do not change a flat tire themselves

Standing by the side of the road with a flat tire is never fun. Especially if you’re staring at the punctured rubber with your hands in your hair and have no idea what to do with it. Don’t worry, you’re far from alone. A majority of the Dutch are unable to replace a flat tire themselves on the road.

Research commissioned by tire manufacturer Apollo Tires shows that many Dutch people do not try to change a punctured tire themselves. Only 36 percent of the 1,000 respondents indicate that they change the flat tire themselves along the road for the spare wheel or take the repair kit in hand. 42 percent of the respondents indicate that they call in a roadside assistance service. 16 percent seek help from a family member, colleague or friend.

The figures confirm that not everyone is aware of whether his or her car has a spare wheel or repair kit on board. Almost one in five respondents (18 percent) indicated that they do not know whether there is a spare wheel or repair kit in the car.

The older the driver, the greater the chance that he or she will do the tire change himself. For example, it appears that 33 percent of the respondents in the age category 18 to 24 years go to work themselves, compared to 42 percent of drivers in the age category 55 to 64 years. Men are more inclined to change a wheel themselves or to address the repair set. 49 percent of the male respondents say they try it themselves compared to 27 percent of the women.

Europe

The same study has also been carried out on a larger scale, with a total of 6,000 European motorists. Of them, 46 percent say they would get to work themselves, while 32 percent would prefer to call in an emergency service. 16 percent of European drivers say they ask for help from a family member, friend or colleague in case of a flat tire.
