The next Apple Watch SE will be made of plastic
Gurman gives in his ‘Power on‘ newsletter this week that it’s increasingly likely that the next-generation Apple Watch SE models will be made of a hard plastic material instead of aluminum. The advantage of this is that plastic keeps costs down. And it may be more attractive to parents looking for an affordable Apple Watch for their kids.
Apple has a new one in July website launched to encourage parents to purchase an Apple Watch for their children. The ‘Apple Watch For Your Kids’ campaign highlights the benefits of an Apple Watch for children, such as location tracking, parent calling options and activity tracking. Adults can easily set up the watches for their children using their own iPhone. It is also easy to prevent your child from using the Apple Watch during school hours.
Other colors
Using hard plastic also makes it possible to produce the Apple Watch SE in a range of fun colours. Colours that are not possible with aluminium. For example, Apple once sold a plastic iPhone 5c and it was available in vibrant blue, yellow, pink and green colours.
Plastic would also better differentiate the next Apple Watch SE from the standard Apple Watch models. The current Apple Watch SE is just a modified version without the latest features. The appearance is not fundamentally different.
The current Apple Watch SE models are currently sold for a price starting at around 240 euros. By switching to plastic, Apple can offer the device cheaper and therefore also better compete with companies that offer cheap smart watches.
