Bitcoin remains the most popular crypto currency in the Netherlands: almost one in ten owns this coin (8%). Cryptocurrency was financed more often with a current account in 2023 (72%) than in 2022 (61%). This is evident from the third edition of the Cryptocurrency Monitor, a large-scale study by Multiscope among more than 4,000 Dutch people.
Crypto holdings remain at 14%
The number of crypto owners in the Netherlands remains unchanged. Just like last year, 14% of the Dutch aged 18 and older (2 million Dutch people) own one or more crypto coins. The number of crypto owners therefore seems to be stagnating. On average, people have invested 11% of their freely available assets in crypto coins.
Bitcoin maintains leading position
Bitcoin remains the most popular crypto currency in the Netherlands. Almost one in ten Dutch people own this coin (8%). However, the number of owners has decreased slightly from 1.25 million in 2022 to 1.23 million in 2023. Just like last year, Ethereum (6%), Cardano (4%), Ripple (3%) and Dogecoin (2%) follow on the ranking.
More frequent financing with checking account
Most crypto owners use money from their checking account to buy crypto coins (72%). This is an increase of 9 percentage points compared to last year (63%). One in three uses savings for the purchase, while borrowed money is rarely used (less than 1%). Young people (18-34 years) use their current account more often (81%) than the over-35s. The latter group uses savings relatively more often (more than 40%).
The results in this press release come from the third edition of the Cryptocurrency Monitor, a large-scale survey of payments, investments and savings in a new economy. The survey surveyed 4,130 respondents aged 18 and over, representing the Dutch population.
