The police are going to large-scale and automatically apprehend drivers

For a few years now, the police have been working with smart cameras that can register whether someone is behind the wheel of a car with a phone in hand. There are also cameras that can handle the work almost completely from A to Z and the police are now purchasing dozens of them.

Motorists who look at their phone while driving will be much more often screwed from next year. The police and the Public Prosecution Service are buying dozens of new cameras that, thanks to smart software, can ‘see’ through the windscreen whether a driver has a mobile phone in his hand. The cameras will be spread throughout the country and can be moved. They can independently monitor a route for weeks, agents are no longer needed. The photos of possible violations are immediately forwarded to the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB). There, an employee assesses whether someone actually has a mobile phone in hand and if that is the case, a fine of €380 follows.

Every police region now also has cameras with which callers behind the wheel can be caught red-handed, but they still have to be operated by an officer. This new system, like a speed camera, can be placed somewhere unguarded. A trial that ended in 2021 was very successful, according to the Public Prosecution Service. The chance of catching offenders was more than 95 percent. The Public Prosecution Service hopes to be able to purchase about fifty cameras. Earlier there was also a test with smart cameras that officers could not just leave unattended.
