On April 24, 1973, construction of the "SNR-300" began in Kalkar. This novel breeder reactor should be able to use nuclear fuel rods much more efficiently than the tried and tested light water reactors - and thus reduce the amount of nuclear waste produced as well as the operating costs. But the energy policy flagship project turned into an investment ruin.
