Avid gamers have probably heard the name The Witness before. Jonathan Blow’s game was released for Mac and consoles in 2016, and has since won a string of awards. And rightly so, because despite the simple concept, The Witness is a game that you will not soon forget.
In this clever puzzle game you take the role of an unknown person who has ended up on an island. You don’t know what to do here and what your goal is. All you see is a square panel on a closed door. You instinctively discover that you open this door by drawing a line through a maze on the panel.
Discover the island
This concept is the core of The Witness. Hundreds of puzzles are hidden on the island that completely turn the concept of a simple maze upside down. What begins as a series of simple puzzles quickly results in complex riddles that go far beyond solving a maze. The island itself will gradually play an increasingly important role in unraveling these puzzles.
We couldn’t wait for The Witness to be played on the iPhone and iPad. Do not be put off by the high price of 9.99 euros, which in this case is a bargain. In this game you can easily lose yourself for hours, if only to discover the beautifully designed island.
Especially on the larger screen of the iPad The Witness looks beautiful. The bright colors pop off the display and although the island is not very large, the different areas are varied.
Getting used to the controls
The controls are the only thing we were initially less satisfied with. While there is support for controllers, most players will navigate the world with the touchscreen. You do this by tapping the screen, pinching your fingers and holding the screen for a second. It takes a bit of practice, but since you are not in a hurry, this ministry does not frustrate.
This makes The Witness one of the best iOS games at the moment. Whether you want to show what your iPhone or iPad is capable of graphically, or you just want to play one of the best puzzle games of recent years: The Witness is not to be missed.
